400 Meter Dash Logic Puzzle Walkthrough

Back to puzzle

1.) Walker tells you that neither Miles nor Bolt was ever in 1st and that Strider was never in 5th or 6th. Bolt tells you that the winner was losing at one point. Since Strider was never in 6th, he didn’t win the race. Surge tells you that Walker and Surge did not win the race either. So the only player who could have won the race (finished in 1st) is Chase. Therefore Chase in the last column is 1st.

2.) Walker and Surge finished 4th and 6th. You also know that Strider is always ahead of Miles and Bolt. Therefore Miles and Bolt must have finished 3rd and 5th, and Strider must have finished 2nd.

3.) Bolt’s starting clue tells you that Chase was in 6th at some point. Strider’s finish line clue tells you that Chase never moved into a worse position, meaning his numbers never got greater. Therefore Chase’s 6 (or one of them) must be in the first position, after 100m.

3.) Chase’s finish line clue tells you that Bolt was in 6th after 200m.

4.) Chase’s 100m clue tells you that Walker was in 1st at some point. Chase’s starting clue tells you that the person who lost was never in 1st; therefor Walker did not lose. So according to Surge’s starting clue, Walker finished in 4th and Surge finished in 6th.

4.) With Chase in 6th after 100m, the only runners who could be in 1st after 100m are Strider and Walker, according to Chase’s 100m clue. But according to Chase’s finish line clue, Bolt was just ahead of Walker after 100m, so Walker could not have been in 1st after 100m. Therefore Strider was in 1st after 100m.

5.) You know that Walker was in 4th. Chase’s 100m clue tells you that Walker was also in 1st at some point. Therefore, according to Strider’s 100m clue, Walker was only ever in 1st or 4th. 1st is already taken by Strider after 100m; therefore Walker was in 4th after 100m.

6.) According to Chase’s finish line clue, Bolt must have been in 3rd after 100m.

7.) According to Walker’s finish line clue, Miles was ahead of Chase after 200m. Walker’s starting clue says that Strider was always ahead of Miles and Bolt. This means that after 200m, Strider was ahead of Miles, Bolt, and Chase. So Strider had to be in 3rd place or better after 200m. Therefore, according to Bolt’s 100m clue, Strider was in 4th after 300m.

8.) According to Strider’s 100m clue, Walker must have been in 1st after 300m.

9.) According to Walker’s starting clue, Miles and Bolt must have been in 5th and 6th (not necessarily respectively) after 300m, since Strider was in 4th. So all that’s left for Chase and Surge after 300m is 2nd and 3rd. According to Strider’s opening clue, then, Surge was in 3rd after 300m. So Chase was in 2nd after 300m.

10.) According to Walker’s finish line clue, Miles (and therefore also Strider) was ahead of Chase after 200m. This means Chase after 200m was in 3rd or worse. 6th is taken after 200m, so Chase after 200m was 4,5, or 6. This means that Surge’s 300m clue is definitely talking about Chase. So now you know that Strider after 200m must have been in 1st, 2nd, or 4th. According to step 7 above, Strider was not in 4th after 200m. And according to Chase’s 300m clue, Strider could not have been in 2nd after 200m. Therefore Strider was in 1st after 200m.

11.) Strider in 1st after 200m means that Walker was in 4th after 200m, according to Strider’s 100m clue.

12.) The remaining choices for after 100m are 2nd and 5th. Therefore, according to Walker’s 200m clue, Surge was in 2nd after 100m. And so Miles was in 5th after 100m.

13.) The remaining choices for after 200m are 2nd, 3rd, and 5th. Accodring to Walker’s finish line clue, Miles could not have been in 5th after 200m. According to Walker’s 200m clue, Surge also could not have been in 5th after 200m. Therefore Chase was in 5th after 200m.

14.) Looking at Chase’s 200m clue, if Bolt goes 3,6,6,3, then Miles goes 5,_,5,5. But Miles’ starting clue prevents him from being in 5th three times, since Walker was in 4th three times. Therefore Bolt did not finish in 3rd, the only other option being that Bolt finished in 5th.

15.) Naturally, Miles finished in 3rd.

16.) Miles’ finishing clue tells you that Bolt cannot be in 6th after 300, so Miles was in 6th after 300m.

17.) Obviously, Bolt was in 5th after 300m.

17.) According to Strider’s starting clue, Miles could not have been in 2nd after 200m. Therefore Miles was in 3rd after 200m and Surge was in 2nd after 200m.
